I oktober publicerade jag en blogg med rubriken Internationella evangelisk-lutherska nätverk.
Det finns anledning att se lite närmare på två av organisationerna: Lutheran World Federation (LWF) och International Lutheran Council (ILC), som representerar 150 respektive 50 medlemskyrkor. Under årens lopp, sedan 2005, har ett antal mötesplatser arrangerats. Här är rapporter från några möten, ett urval:
Ett tiotal lutherska kyrkor har medlemskap (helt eller delvis) i båda organisationerna, vilket förmodligen innebär vissa spänningsmoment.
I juni 2018 händer plötsligt något överraskande! LWF tillkännager att man bryter samråden med ILC. Tyvärr har jag ännu inte funnit det officiella beskedet från LWFs sida, utan har enbart tillgång till ILCs tolkning och viljeyttring (om LWF Objections):
In recent years, a number of LWF churches and confessional groups within LWF churches have contacted the ILC in hopes of developing a closer relationship. In his report, Dr. Junge indicates that he disapproves of the ILC’s fielding of such requests as well as its plans to make room in its organizational structure to recognize these groups. The LWF is therefore suspending meetings with the ILC at the present time.
The ILC is unapologetic in its position. “When faithful Lutherans come seeking closer ties to the ILC, we will of course welcome and support them, even if they should be a minority in their own country or church body,” said Dr. Collver. “Christian hospitality and love demand nothing less.”
The LWF report also suggests the ILC has not been clear in affirming that churches may hold membership in both organizations. While the ILC feels it has been clear on this matter, it here reaffirms that it permits dual membership in the International Lutheran Council and the Lutheran World Federation.
In his report, Dr. Junge also accuses the ILC of spreading “aggressive and wrong communications about the LWF”—charges that the ILC categorically denies. “We take very seriously the Christian’s call not to bear false witness against one’s neighbour,” Dr. Collver noted, “just as we take seriously the entire Law and Gospel in God’s Holy Scripture.”
The LWF writes that it envisions the suspension of meetings with the ILC as temporary in nature, with plans to resume meetings “after the second half of 2019.” The ILC for its part stands ready to resume contact with the LWF at any time.

Att “ett konkurrensförhållande” varit för handen är uppenbart. Några år senare får vi veta att LWF är kritiska till att Lettlands evangelisk-lutherska kyrka (LELB) ansöker om medlemskap i ILC: LWF responds to decision by Lutheran church in Latvia. I det officiella brevet ges antydningar om vad som skiljer de båda organisationerna åt:
Communion relations, expressed in joint worship and common witness in the world, are a gift, before being a task. United around the gospel of God’s gift of justification by grace through faith, LWF member churches embrace diversity as they jointly witness to Christ. They seek to include each other, dealing with differences while jointly articulating the gospel message of Christ for the present time, and supporting each other for vibrant witness to this message in their respective contexts.
Membership criteria in the ILC subject churches to a set of theological principles, commitments, and practices. Several of these are at odds with what LWF member churches hold in common.
Jag stannar upp inför två formuleringar, som visar att de två organisationernas identitet går isär. LWF … member churches embrace diversity as they jointly witness to Christ … och ILC … a set of theological principles, commitments, and practices … Sagt på ett annat sätt: LWF har öppenhet i tolkningen av bekännelsen om den kristna tron, medan ILC har en mer sluten, avgränsad bekännelse av den kristna tron.
En av de tiotal kyrkor som helt eller delvis har dubbla medlemskap (i LWF och ILC) är Evangelisk lutherska kyrkan i Tanzania (ELCT). Kyrkan har inte mindre än 25 stift och två av dem har, så långt, anslutning till ILC: South East of Lake Victoria Diocese och Lake Tanganyika Diocese. Fler stift lär vara på väg att söka om anslutning till ILC. Stiften har stor grad av autonomi, men frågan blir på sikt ändå hur den dubbla identiteten kommer att hanteras internt i ELCT? Och hur utomstående partners kommer att agera?
En annan aspekt: både LWF och ILC tillhandahåller ekonomiskt stöd till medlemskyrkorna. Det medför att medlemskyrkor kan ställas inför svåra val: hur hanteras öppenhet respektive tydlighet i identitetsfrågan, i förhållande till lockande projekt? Det blir intressant att följa den fortsatta utvecklingen.
